Installing Windows 98 on a new hard disk

If you are preparing a new (blank) hard disk, boot from the 9200/mint Setup/Rescue disk, then follow steps 1 & 2 on screen to create a partition and format the disk.

After you have correctly partitioned and formatted your hard disk, always use the following procedure to achieve a successful installation of the Windows 98 on the 9200/mint®.

PART A: The Basic Operating System.

  1. Boot from the 9200/mint® Setup/Rescue Disk, choose the Set Up Windows 95/98 on this 9200/mint® option, put the Windows 98 CD in the CD-ROM drive, and press [Enter]. Follow all the on-screen instructions displayed by Windows 98 to complete the CD-ROM setup. Most of the options you may choose based on your own preferences. When you get to the Choose Directory box, please select the default directory c:\windows. When the Setup Options box appears, select portable for the 9200/mint. Next, Windows 98 asks you to select components to install. You may select the most common components or find the list of components to choose. Setup will then ask you for the identification of your system, enter 9200mint in the name field. When setup tries to create a startup disk, click on [Next]. An "Insert Disk" message will appear, click on [Cancel] to skip creating the start up disk. The 9200/mint Setup/Rescue disk can be used as your start up disk. Next, setup will start copying files and configure the system. This step may take 30 minutes to complete. After files are copied, setup will restart the system and then ask for user information, enter your name and company name if applicable. On the next screen, select "I accept the Agreement" for the windows 98 license agreement. Setup will then ask you to enter the product ID #; enter your Windows 98 installation key from your Windows 98 installation booklet or Windows 98 certificate of authenticity sticker. When the "PC card (PCMCIA) Wizard" window appears, click on [Next] to install the 32-bit driver. Click on [Next] again, then click on [Finish] on next screen to complete the 32-bit PCMCIA driver installation.
  2. After setup finishes detecting and setting up hardware and Plug and Play devices, it will restart the system. It will work for a while and then ask you to select the correct time zone for your location. It will work a little more and then reboot again. After it reboots, Windows 98 will ask you to enter the password. You may enter a password at this time, or simply press [Enter] to continue.

PART B: The Audio Drivers (required for sound):

  1. After Windows 95 restarts, click on the Start button, then go to Settings > Control Panel. In the Control Panel, double-click on the System icon at the bottom right of the Control Panel. (You may need to drag down the scroll bar on the right side of the Control Panel window to scroll down to the bottom of the window to see this icon).
  2. Click on the Device Manager tab.
  3. Drag the scroll bar down to scroll to the bottom of the device list. You should now see the Sound, video and game controllers section. In this section, click on the "YAMAHA OPL3-Sax WDM Driver", and then click on [Properties] button at the bottom of the window.
  4. Click on [Update Driver] button.
  5. Place the "Yamaha Audio Driver for Win95" (Utility Diskette 11) in your floppy drive. If you do not have Utility diskette #11, place the "Notebook Multimedia Utilities V1.0 CD" in the CD-ROM. Click on [Next] on the "Update Device Driver Wizard" window.
  6. Click on [Next] on the next window to search a better driver.
  7. The next window asks you what device to search for the new driver. Select the floppy disk drive if you are using the Utility diskette #11. If you are using the Notebook Multimedia Utilities CD, go to step 11.
  8. Windows will now search the floppy diskette and report that it can not find an updated driver for the device and that you are already using the best driver for this device. Important Note: It is critical that you use the old driver (from the diskette) in order for the sound system to work properly. Select "Install one of the other drivers" then click on [View List]. Click on [OK] on the next screen to use the "YAMAHA OPL3-Sax Sound System" driver (dated 06-25-1997). Click on [Next] then [Next] again to install driver from the diskette. At this point, you may see an "Msgsrv32" error message or you may see an "insert disk" message asking for the "OPL3-Sax driver for windows95 disk". If it is the "Msgsrv32" error message, go to step 9. If you see the "Insert disk" message, click on [OK]. A "Copying files…" box will appear and claims it cannot find the file ‘Opl3sa.drv’. Type a: in the Copy Files From blank, then click [OK]. The files will be copied. Click on [Finish] then go to step 10.
  9. The system gives an error message: "Msgsrv32 has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down". Click on [Close] twice to close the "Msgsrv32 message" window. Remove utility diskette #11 from the floppy disk drive, click on [Start], [Shut Down], then select [Restart] to restart the system. Repeat steps 1-8 again,
  10. Click on [Start], [Shut Down], then select [Restart] to restart the system. The audio drivers have been installed. You should now go to the next step: Part C: Setting up Video Display Resolution and Color Depth.
  11. Click on "Specify a location" then enter D:\win95\english\sound in the space provided. Click on [Next]. Windows will now search the CD-ROM and report that it can not find an updated driver for the device and that you are already using the best driver for this device. Important Note: It is critical that you use the old driver (from the CD) in order for the sound system to work properly. Select "Install one of the other drivers" then click on [View List]. Click on [OK] on the next screen to use the "YAMAHA OPL3-Sax Sound System" driver (dated 08-08-1997). Click on [Next] then [Next] again to install driver from the CD. At this point, you may see an "Msgsrv32" error message or you may see an "insert disk" message asking for the "OPL3-Sax driver for windows95 disk". If it is the "Msgsev32" error message, go to step 12. If you see the "Insert Disk" message, click on [OK]. A "Copying files…" box will appear and claims it cannot find the file ‘Opl3sa.drv’. Type D:\win95\english\sound\ in the Copy Files From blank and then click [OK]. The files will be copied. Click on [Finish] then go to step 13.
  12. The system gives an error message: "Msgsrv32 has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down". Click on [Close]. Click on [Start], [Shut Down] then select [Restart] to restart the system. Repeat steps 1-7 and 11 again.
  13. Click on [Start], [Shut Down], then select [Restart] to restart the system. The audio drivers have been installed. You should now go to the next step: Part C: Setting up Video Display Resolution and Color Depth.
