#6203: Installing Windows 95 (OEM release 2*).

*OEM Release 2 has a Copyright date of 1981-1996 and part # 000-45234 on the Microsoft Windows 95 install CD. OEM Release 2 also says "Microsoft Internet Explorer" on the title screen. If your copyright date is 1981-1995, you have OEM Release 1 and you must refer to tech note #6201 for accurate instructions!

The following procedures will allow you to complete a full-featured Windows 95 installation on your 6200 /mint notebook. Read carefully!

PART A: The Basic Operating System.

  1. Boot from the 6200 Setup disk, choose the Set Up Windows 95 on this 6200 option, put the Windows95 CD in the CD-ROM drive, and type setup [Enter] at the A:> prompt.
  2. Follow all the on-screen procedures displayed by Windows 95 to complete the CD ROM setup, but when you get to the Change Directory box, change the install directory to c:\win95. Also, when setup asks you to place a checkmark beside Network Adapter and/or Sound ... Card, place a checkmark beside sound card but not beside Network Adapter.
  3. After Windows 95 is set up, click the Windows 95 Start button, then choose Settings -> Control Panel.
  4. Double-click the System icon at the bottom of the Control Panel.
  5. Click the Device Manager tab.
  6. Double-click CD-ROM, then double-click the Teac CD-48E listing.
  7. Click the Settings tab.
  8. Click on the small box beside Auto Insert Notification to remove the checkmark from the box.
  9. Click the [ OK ] button. In the next window, also click the [ OK ] button. The system will ask you if you want to Restart; click the [ Yes ] button.

PART B: The Audio Drivers (required for sound).

After you complete Part A above, you will notice that you do not have sound, and that there is a yellow exclamation point beside the sound driver. This is normal; please follow this procedure to install the correct sound driver.

  1. Click the Windows 95 Start button, then choose Settings -> Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the System icon at the bottom of the control panel.
  3. Click the Device Manager tab.
  4. Double-click the ESS 1688 Audiodrive listing with the yellow exclamation mark (!) beside it.
  5. Click the Driver tab.
  6. Click the [ Update Driver ] button.
  7. Windows offers to search for the driver; click the Yes option and the [ Next ] button.
  8. Windows will search but not find the driver. Click the [ Other Locations ] button.
  9. Put the Multimedia Series CD in the CD-ROM Drive and type d:\driver\audio\95drv in the typing space below the words Location: and click [ OK ].
  10. Click the [ Finish ] button.
  11. Windows will pop up a window reading "Please insert the disk labelel install disk 1 and click OK." There is no disk; just click [ OK ]. Another box pops up labeled "Copying Files ..." Type d:\driver\audio\95drv in the Copy files from field and click the [ OK ] button.
  12. The system will ask if it is OK to restart the system; click the [ Yes ] button.

PART C: The Video Display Drivers (optional).

  1. Click the Windows 95 Start button, then choose Settings -> Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Display icon.
  3. Click the Settings tab.
  4. Click the [ Advanced Properties ] button.
  5. Click the Adapter Tab, then click the [ Change ] button.
  6. Click the [ Have Disk ] button.
  7. At this point you may (A) put the 6200 /mint Windows 95 Video Drivers disk in the drive, OR (B) put the Multimedia Series CD in the CD-ROM Drive and type d:\driver\video\95drv-e in the typing space below the words Copy manufacturers files from:.
  8. Double-click on the video driver listed (Trident ....). The 6200 /mint uses the Trident 9385.
  9. Click the Monitor Tab, then click the [ Change ] button.
  10. Double-click Laptop Display Panel 800x600 on the list, unless your notebook is equipped with an upgraded display panel of a higher resolution (not available as of this document).
  11. Click the [ Close ] button.
  12. Change the Desktop Area setting to 800 x 600 by moving the slider control to the right.
  13. Change the Color Palette to High Color (16-bit) if you have a TFT display.
  14. Click the [ Close ] button.
  15. The system will ask if it is OK to restart; click the [ Yes ] button.

PART D: The Alps GlidePoint(r) Driver (optional).

  1. Click the Windows 95 Start button, then choose Settings -> Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Mouse icon.
  3. Click the general tab.
  4. Beside Name click the [ Change ] button.
  5. Click the [ Have Disk ] button.
  6. Put the 6200 /mint Alps GlidePoint(r) disk in the drive.
  7. Click the [ OK ] button.
  8. Double-click the only name of the mouse driver that appears (Alps ...).
  9. Click the [ Close ] button.
  10. The system will ask if it is OK to restart now; click the [ Yes ] button.
  11. Your mouse driver is installed. For specific Alps options, go to the Control Panel and double-click on Mouse. Then click the General tab, and click the [ Options ] button. If you'd like to turn off the tapping feature (mouse clicks caused by tapping on the pad surface), you can from here to the Tapping tab and remove the x from the Tapping option.

PART E: The PC-Card (PCMCIA) drivers (required for PCMCIA use).

  1. Click the Windows 95 Start button, then choose Settings -> Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the System icon at the bottom of the control panel.
  3. Click the Device manager tab.
  4. Double-click the Other Devices listing to open that category.
  5. Double-click the first PCI PCMCIA bridge entry in the other devices category.
  6. Put the 6200 /mint Windows 95 PCMCIA Drivers disk in the drive. Put the Windows 95 install CD in the Cd-Rom drive. Do NOT attempt to use PCMCIA drivers from the Multimedia Series CD; these are incomplete!
  7. Click the driver tab, the click the [ Update Driver] button.
  8. Click the Yes option and the [ Next ] button.
  9. Click the [ Finish ] button.
  10. If the system asks for permission to restart; click the [ No ] button.
  11. Click the [ Close ] button.
  12. Repeat steps 5-9 on the remaining PCI PCMCIA bridge entry in the other devices category.
  13. Click the [ Close ] button.
  14. Click [ Yes ] if the system asks for permission to restart, or click the Windows 95 Start button, then choose Shutdown, and click [ Yes ] for the Shut Down The Computer option.
  15. Restart, click the Windows 95 Start button, then choose Settings -> Control Panel.
  16. Double-click the PC Card icon.
  17. If the window that pops up says anything about "Welcome ...", please follow step 19. Otherwise, your PCMCIA slots are ready to use.
  18. Click [ Next ], [ Next ] again, [ Finish ], and [ Yes ].

PART F: Installing the 6200 /mint "Welcome" bitmap (optional):

  1. Click the Windows 95 Start button, then choose Programs -> MS-DOS Prompt.
  2. Put the 6200 /mint setup disk in the floppy drive.
  3. Type a:62future [Enter].
  4. Type exit [Enter].
  5. Click the Windows 95 Start button, then choose Settings -> Control Panel.
  6. Double-click the Display icon.
  7. Click the background tab.
  8. From the list of available wallpaper, choose 62FUTURE for TFT (Active Matrix) screens or 62FUT256 for Dual-Scan (Passive) screens.
  9. Click on OK.
