#534: Setting up Windows NT Workstation 4.0 on the 5200 /mint.

1. FDISK and FORMAT your hard drive using DOS 6.22, including the transfer of system files. Windows NT Workstation 4.0 Setup may not make it through the formatting procedure on a raw hard drive on the 5200.

2. Begin a normal Windows NT Workstation 4.0 setup procedure. The rest of these notes are in setup order, as much as possible.

3. Go ahead and create an Emergency Repair Disk when prompted.

4. If you have a PCMCIA network adapter, you can set up networking during this setup procedure. Specify your network adapter manually (pick it from the list). If you are using the 3COM Etherlink III PCMCIA adapter, purchased from Micro International, specify the "3COM Etherlink III ISA/PCMCIA" as your adapter. Then select PCMCIA (not ISA) as the adapter type.

5. DO NOT set up Remote Access Service during setup if you are planning to use a PCMCIA modem for it. Other than this, finish the rest of setup using your own preferences.

6. After setup is complete, if you have a network adapter and need to use resources on a Novell Netware (R) server, go to Control Panel / Network / Services, and add "Client Service for Netware." Allow the OS to restart when prompted. When it comes back up, double-click on Network Neighborhood, then on Entire Netowork, then on Netware or Compatible Network. At this point, any available Netware servers should appear on the list. For best performance, map Netware drives to actual drive letters for anything but the most occasional use. Unmapped Netware drives will seem to lag for a few seconds before their directories appear.

7. During startup, Windows NT 4.0 can actually pause on the blue screen with white text for up to half a minute, while it verifies your 5200's current hardware configuration.

8. You must manually delete PCMCIA cards as needed, then SHUT DOWN the operating system before removing PCMCIA cards. If you do not manually delete PCMCIA cards when you remove them, you may receive an error message about how some service or device was unable to start, then next time you boot up. If you do not SHUT DOWN before removing a card, your system may lock up before it finishes shutting down.

9. Any PCMCIA cards you plan to use must be inserted prior to booting up your system. Even then, you must go to Control Panel / PCMCIA to see any new cards. If a new card is a modem, it must then be added under Control Panel / Modems. If it is a network card, it must be added under Control Panel / Network / Adapters, etc. etc.

10. When changes require that NT find its setup CD, you may need to type D:\i386\ in the directory box to help it find the setup CD ...

Please report any errors in this procedure to technical support immediately! Of course, we also welcome any and all comments and suggestions concerning using Windows NT 4.0 on the 5200. Call 1-800-967-5667 and ask for Tech Support. Thank you!
