#536: Windows NT 3.51 "never shuts down."

There is a bug in the Windows NT 3.51 PCMCIA drivers which prevents them from "timing out" when cards fail to stop at shutdown time. Thus, when the system attempts shut down with PCMCIA cards in the slot, it hangs on the message along the lines of "please wait while unsaved data is written to the hard disk." Eventually, a message "It is now safe to turn off your system" is supposed to appear; if you leave PCMCIA cards in your slot, the message will never come.

There is an easy work-around: when you get the "please wait" message, start watching the LCD status display on your 5200 /mint. As soon as the cylinder which indicates hard disk activity stops blinking for 5 seconds, you can turn off the system.

Microsoft also has a fix for the problem, available at www.microsoft.com/kb/articles/q108/2/61.htm.

Note that Windows NT 4.0 reduces this problem to modem PC cards only, and there is a fix available on this site for NT4.
