#535: Achieving Infared file transfer with an HP 200LX Palmtop.

The 5200's SIR compliant Infared ports are great for letting your 5200 do file transfers with an HP 200LX Palmtop computer. Here's how to do it without buying any additional software:

SETTING UP COMMUNICATIONS FROM SCRATCH:

On the 5200:

Cntl-Alt-S for setup. Go to Communications and Enable COM2 (and set to IRDA mode if applicable).

WINDOWS 95: Delete all references to Infared in Control Panel / System / Device Manager. Run Hyperterminal and create a new configuration called Palmtop. Set the modem as "Direct to COM2." Set the baud rate to 115200. Set File / Properties / Setup/ ASCII / Echo Typed Characters Locally , Append Line Feeds ..., and Send Line Feeds ... all to ON. Or, download this one: Pre-configured HP 200LX PALMTOP Hyperterminal File .

On the Palmtop:

[&...] , [C] , [Alt] , [C] , [S] , [B]

scroll down to highlight 115200

[I]

scroll down to highlight Infared

[V] , [Alt]-[C] , [Alt]-[W]

Optional - at this point you can select the download directory: press [D], then select whatever directory you want to download to, as long as it is write-enabled, use [space] to select.

[TAB] (highlight OK button) then [Etner] when directory shown is the one you want to download to.

[Enter] [Enter]

USING THE ABOVE CONFIGURED SETUP

To start the 5200 side communications, double-click on Palmtop in the Hyperterminal folder.

To start the Palmtop side communications, press the [&...] key and then press C for DataComm.

After loading this, you should be able to type on the 5200 and see your typing on the Palmtop, and vice versa. Use this to test the infared link.

To send a file from the palmtop to the 5200, Press [Alt] [F] [S] (on the palmtop!). Then find the file you want to send, hit the SPACE bar to select it, and press [Enter]. The file will appear on the 5200 desktop. You may then open up My Computer and drag it to where you really want it.

To send a file from the 5200 to the palmtop, Press [Alt]-[T] and then [S] (on the 5200). Then click the Browse button and find the file you want to send, and double-click on it.Then click the SEND button. Quickly move to the Palmtop and press [Alt] [F] [R]. The palmtop will receive the file and store it in the root directory of C:\. To move it, use the Palmtop's file manager program or the DOS prompt.

During transfers, you may see odd characters on the screen, and sometimes the link will lag for as much as 5 seconds. This is normal. Small files will transfer so fast you may not even get to see the transfer screen. Other times, a transfer will not work at all. Just press Cntl-Break to stop the attempted transfer on the Palmtop, then try the tranfer again.
