#521: Installing Windows 95

The following procedure will allow you to successfully install Windows 95 on your Mint 5200 notebook:

(1) Boot from the 5200 W95 Setup disk, put the Windows95 CD in the CD-Rom drive, and type setup [Enter] at the A:> prompt.

(2) Follow the procedures displayed by Windows95 to complete the CD ROM setup.

(3) After Windows95 is loaded, click on START, PROGRAMS, and MS-DOS PROMPT. It will bring you to a C:\WINDOWS> prompt.

(4) Put the 5200 W95 Setup disk back in the A: drive. Type A:52 [Enter] at the C:\WINDOWS> prompt (this will copy specific files for this notebook to Windows95).

(5) Remove the W95 Setup disk from the drive, then type exit [Enter] to return to Windows 95.

(6) Double-click on MY COMPUTER, CONTROL PANEL, and PC CARD, and follow the prompts to proceed with installation of the 32-bit Windows95 PCMCIA drivers.

(7) Repeat step (3) to get to a C:\WINDOWS> prompt.

(8) Type regedit [Enter] at the C:\WINDOWS> prompt.

(9) Double-click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, SYSTEM, CurrentControlSet, SERVICES, CLASS, PCMCIA, and 0000, then double-click DRIVER on the right side, change the driver name from socketsv.vxd to ssvadem.vxd, and click on OK. If you have 0001 and/or 0002 folders listed in addition to the 0000 folder, also double-click these folders and make the same change to the driver name, clicking on OK after you make each change. Then click on the X at the top right corner of the registery edit window to return to the C:\WINDOWS> prompt.

(10) Type exit [Enter] to return to Windows95.

(11) Put the Cirrus 7543 VGA Driver for Windows 95 disk in the drive. Double-click on MY COMPUTER, CONTROL PANEL, and DISPLAY. At the top of the window that appears, click the Settings tab. Click the CHANGE DISPLAY TYPE button. Beside Adapter Type, click the Change button. Click the Have Disk button. Click the OK button. Double-click on the Cirrus Logic 754X PCI option. Click the close button. Again, click the close button. Choose YES to restart your computer. After it restarts, your Windows 95 installation will be complete.
